Piet Retief

The town was laid out in 1883 from the farms called "Osloop" and "Geluk". It was named after the European pioneer/ Voortrekker Piet Retief, who was later killed by the Zulu’s under the orders of king Dingane.

Piet Retief was changed to "eMkhondo",which is "Assegai" in Zulu, because the town is in the Assegai Valley.
