Machadodorp was established in 1894 and was named after Portuguese engineer Joachim Machado who surveyed the land for the Nelspruit-Delagoa Bay railway. The most interesting part of Macadodorp’s history was when it became South Africa’s capital during the second Anglo-Boer war. When the British invaded Pretoria, the president hopped aboard a train and headed down to Machadodorp. Paul Kruger ran the country from two train carriages, one was his office, and the second housed his parliament.
