Old Ngwenya Iron Ore Mine
Dating back 42 000 years the mine has been used by a lot of different cultures for the red ochre that is abundant in the region. More recently in the 70’s the mining company Anglo-American mined more than 20 000 000 tonnes of low grade metal from the mine. Luckily after a few years the mining stopped and nature was allowed to claim back what once belonged to it. This created a landscape where old mining sites are fresh water lakes and old mine heaps have become mountains.
The area is extremely beautiful and filled with life, unfortunately there is a new mining operation that has started in the region. So it’s best to go look at the beauty that’s within the area before you can’t anymore.
